SEEL Receives Award for Outstanding Neighborhood Energy Savings Outreach Program

Awarded for the Largest Most Effective Energy Savings Program in the Country that Targets Grassroots Community

Detroit (October 12, 2011) Solutions for Energy Efficient Logistics (SEEL) was recently awarded for its design and implementation of the largest, most effective energy savings program in the country that focuses on reaching lower and middle income neighborhoods. Called the Neighborhood Energy Savings Outreach (NESO) program, SEEL – at no cost to residents – provides in-home energy consultation to DTE customers, showing them how to save energy and money.

SEEL, a national energy efficiency company, based in Detroit, Michigan, received the 2011 Andromeda Star of Energy Efficiency Award in Washington, D.C., at a black tie gala hosted by the Alliance to Save Energy. The award recognizes individuals and companies that have worked tirelessly to advance energy efficiency. Senator Hansen Clarke was on hand to bestow the award to Louis James, president and chief executive officer of SEEL.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Alliance to Save Energy,” said James. “Working with DTE on the NESO program has been productive and rewarding. Every day, we see real, measurable results in reducing energy costs for the people of Detroit. We reduced carbon emissions for the environment and moved more than 100 people from blue-collar to green collar jobs demonstrating that programs like this work.”

The program was started two years ago, in 2009, when DTE Energy hired SEEL to implement an energy efficiency program for electric and natural gas customers in multi-family and commercial properties. Last year, DTE Energy approached SEEL to develop and administer an innovative and ambitious pilot program to target customers with low energy efficiency program participation and customer satisfaction ratings.

The program is built on rigorous community outreach that goes directly into homes to raise awareness about conserving energy. SEEL professionals conduct in-home energy analysis and consultation of lighting, weatherization, appliances, consumer electronics, and HVAC systems. Based on recommendations, highly trained crews install energy saving products and procedures, servicing more than 2,500 customers per month.

DTE Energy’s manager of Energy Optimization, David Henderson, commented in an interview that the SEEL’s program has positively impacted energy conservation throughout the city.

“The NESO program has enabled us to work with our customers to save money and reduce energy use citywide,” said Henderson. “We are proud of the impact this program has had on such a large number of people and our partnership with SEEL to deliver the results.”

Solutions for Energy Efficient Logistics (SEEL) is a minority business enterprise joint venture between Motor City International and Ecos. SEEL was formed to bring the logistics of Motor City International for field work with Ecos’ expertise in energy management solutions. SEEL’s services expand beyond utility companies to include municipalities and other commercial enterprise stakeholders. Other clients include PECO, PPL, DP&L, Puget Sound Energy, BC Hydro and Energy Trust of Oregon, to name a few.
